Shop Secondhand First: Tips from Resale Pros
Share
Earth Day is a great reminder that your choices as a consumer can make a meaningful impact. Choosing resale helps extend the life of great clothing and home goods, keeps usable items out of landfills, puts money back into your local economy, and fills your closet with unique finds.
Instead of buying new, resale allows you to build your style in a way that feels personal and creative. If you're not a seasoned secondhand shopper, it can feel overwhelming at first. We've got some great tips from long-time thrifters and consignment buyers to help you feel more at ease.
🌏 Earth Day Tips for Resale Shopping Like a Pro
1. Bring your own bag
A reusable tote is always a smart move. It’s an easy eco-friendly habit, and it makes carrying your inevitable great finds so much easier. At Amanda's Exchange, we've chosen to go bagless to promote less waste. We hope to help our clients get in the habit of keeping reusable bags on hand!
2. Know your measurements and bring a tape measure
Sizing can vary dramatically depending on the brand, era, or style. Knowing your waist, bust, inseam, and shoe sizes (including US and UK sizing when possible) can save time and help you shop with confidence. A small tape measure is especially handy when dressing rooms are busy, but we always encourage you to try your items on, as our items are final sale.
3. Read the materials and research the brands
Take a moment to check fabric content and care labels. Natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, and silk often age beautifully, while sturdy fabric blends (made from 2 or more fibers) can offer durability and easy care. Understanding materials helps you choose pieces that fit your lifestyle. If brand ethics are important to you, companies such as Pact, Rothy's, and Eileen Fisher (to name a few!) are transparent about their sustainable practices.
4. Know your style
This is a big one! Secondhand shopping is easier when you have a vision. Pinterest boards, saved outfits, magazine clippings, and inspiration photos can help you identify what you actually need and love. This makes it easier to spot pieces that work for your wardrobe, regardless of how they look on the hanger or are styled on the mannequin.
5. Buy with intention
Choose pieces you love, feel great in, and can picture reaching for often. Thoughtful shopping requires intentionality. We love to see our clients find items that truly fit their life and personal style.Â
♻️ Why Resale Matters
Every secondhand purchase gives an item another chapter. It reduces waste, helps maximize the resources already used to create it, and supports a more circular approach to fashion.
This Earth Day, we hope you celebrate by speaking up, educating yourself, and of course - shopping secondhand. Stop in and explore what’s new at Amanda's Exchange!
